This wasn't Donald's view. I don't think that's what changed things, though. I think he's the one that changed. He was associating with movie stars and producers and many of his friends were stage directors.

He was star struck by Broadway and Hollywood and leaned towards a career in the theater and film, which appeared to be where he wanted to be.

The sign of a really great designer is somebody who has his finger on the pulse and knows what consumers want. It's really interesting that now there are no more designers out there that start anything.

You don't have the New Look; you don't have somebody doing Chanel suits. You don't have anybody that does something that sweeps across the country - something you have to have. Nobody's doing that anymore. Designers are different today.

It's no longer creative in the same sense. There's nobody who catches the time. To be a really great designer you have to get your finger on it.

It was a very curious time - it's really funny how it has all swung back now. During that period, designers were real designers and they were concerned with their collections. Now they're more like movie stars. Today there is a different kind of designing and lifestyle that goes with designing that wasn't there then.
