For his strong statements in color and textile design, Donald Brooks received the American Printed Fabrics Council Award in 1971 and 1973. In 1974 he was awarded the Parsons' Medal for Distinguished Achievement for his influence on stage costume. This award put him in the company of Adrian, Christian Dior, Claire McCardell and Norman Norell, as the fifth awardee since 1956.

As a famous Parsons student, he influenced the school with his talent and versatility in design. Starting in 1954, Mr. Brooks dedicated himself to the education of young designers through his work as a critic in the Parsons' Fashion Design Department. He directed student theatrical projects for eighteen years, and he is also an honorary member of the Board of Governors of Parsons for his many years of service.
