Following the tradition of Norman Norell and Claire McCardell, Donald Brooks brought Americans clothes of couture quality and design as well as freedom from dependence on foreign sources of inspiration. He was inspired by and championed the "American Look" whereby women no longer felt the necessity for a French label to confirm their taste and status.
Deeply influenced by the careers of legendary Hollywood costume designer Adrian and fashion designer Mainbocher, Brooks infused practicality with glamour in his designs for theater, film and television.
